Which combo, and how to fish it
The combos
- Popper Clacker with 3" Shrimp — the loudest option. Wind chop, dirty water, covering ground.
- Oval Clacker with 3" Shrimp — the everyday flats rig, and the one to start with.
- Cigar Clacker with 3" Shrimp — slim profile, casts into wind, sharper and quieter click. For calm water and pressured fish.
- Popper Clacker with Swim Bait — surface commotion up front, thumping paddle tail behind. When fish are keyed on bait schools.
- Deadly Tandem Curl Tail — two C.A.L. Curl Tails rigged with a bullet weight. A different animal: no noisemaker, just twin tails working at a crawl. Excellent for sight-fishing.
Pop, then wait
Cast, give the clacker one hard pop, then do nothing at all for a five count. The 1/4 oz shrimp behind it falls naturally on the slack, and that fall is when seatrout, redfish and snook eat it. If you are popping steadily you are working hard and catching less.
This is also the easiest correct way to fish an artificial shrimp if you are new to it — the rig does the hard part, which is making yourself pause long enough.
