Arapaima are measured in feet and pounds most lures were never designed for. The Bait Buster is here because of one detail: a single heavy upright hook set in a weighted soft body, rather than trebles that straighten or tear free during a long fight with a fish this size.
Choosing a Bait Buster for arapaima
All four models share the same 4-1/4" body and differ in weight and how deep they run.
- Shallow Runner — 5/8 oz, 5/0 hook. Flooded forest and shallow lagoon edges, fished slowly just under the surface.
- Deep Runner — 3/4 oz, 5/0 Mustad, line tie on top of the head to keep it running sub-surface. The general-purpose choice.
- Trolling — 7/8 oz. Deeper water and moving current, or casting anywhere over five feet.
- Super Heavy Trolling — 1.4 oz on a 6/0 Mustad Extra Heavy Ultra Point. The one to reach for when the fish are big and the cover is heavy.
Replacement Bait Buster Bodies and Bait Buster Jigs are sold separately, which matters on a trip where re-supply is not an option — carry spare bodies rather than spare lures.
