Snapper Lures

Mangrove snapper are structure-bound, sharp-eyed and famously leader-shy. Catching them on artificials comes down to a small profile, a light fluorocarbon leader and a bait that falls naturally beside a piling rather than being cast past it.

How to fish for mangrove snapper

Find hard structure with current on it — bridge pilings, dock posts, jetty rock, channel edges. Snapper hold tight to it and rarely move far. Position up-current and let the bait drift back into the structure, keeping just enough tension to feel the take. They hit fast and turn straight back into cover, so the hookset has to be immediate.

The Tiny TerrorEyz at 2" is the right size for this fish and falls with the internal weight doing the work. Two other baits worth carrying for snapper: the 2" Shrimp, which is close enough to the real thing to fool a wary fish, and the C.A.L. Curl Tail on a light short shank jig head.

Drop to 15–20 lb fluorocarbon and go lighter still in clear water. Snapper will refuse a bait on heavy leader all day and then eat the same bait on lighter line on the next cast. Natural colors — Near Clear, Pearl, Rootbeer — beat bright ones here.
