Crappie & Speck Lures

Around Lake Okeechobee, where these baits are made, crappie are called specks and the season is an institution. They school tight, hold on brush and structure, and they eat small — which is the entire specification for a speck bait.

How to fish for specks

Find brush piles, submerged timber, canal bends and bridge pilings, and fish vertically or on a very slow horizontal retrieve. Specks feed upward, so keep the bait slightly above where you think the fish are holding — a lure below them gets ignored. In the spring spawn they move shallow into reeds and pads and become far easier to reach.

The Tiny TerrorEyz at 2" is the size these fish want, with a fall rate that suits a slow vertical presentation. The C.A.L. 3" Paddle Tail Grubs and C.A.L. Curl Tail on a light 1/16 oz short shank jig head are also worth carrying — both keep working at the crawl this fishing demands.

Light line matters more than lure choice. Specks have paper-thin mouths, so keep the drag loose and do not set hard.
