C.A.L. Shad Tails & Jerk Baits

The C.A.L. series is the backbone of the D.O.A. line — bodies-only soft plastics in more colors than anything else made, designed to be rigged the way the water demands rather than sold pre-committed to one presentation.

The four baits, and how to rig them

Shad Tails

The 3" Shad Tail is the single best-selling bait D.O.A. makes and a mainstay from inches of water to ocean depths. Its paddle tail thumps on the slowest retrieve, which is what makes it work for seatrout over grass and redfish on the bottom alike. The 4" Shad Tail is the same bait scaled up for bigger fish and bigger water — snook, striped bass, and anywhere mullet are the forage.

Jerk Baits

The 4" Jerk Bait has a forked tail; the 5.5" has a diamond tail. Both can be worked on the surface or sub-surface. Rig either on a long neck offset worm hook in 3.5/0 or 5/0 with a pinch weight and you have a weedless shallow-water lure for fresh or salt — the standard mangrove and grass-line rig.

Which jig head

Short shank for the 3" Shad and 4" Jerk; long shank for the 4" Shad and 5.5" Jerk. The full breakdown by size and weight is on the C.A.L. Jig Heads page. For a different look, try a Chug Head, which turns any C.A.L. bait into a topwater or a diver, or a Hot Head for a contrasting head color with holographic eyes.

Buying by the pack

Bodies come in 12-packs and 50-packs. If you fish one color hard, the 50-pack is substantially better value — and soft plastics are a consumable, not a purchase.
